Pilot’s history

The history of Pilot Pen dates back to 1915 when Professor Ryōsuke Namiki resigned from his teaching job at Tokyo Nautical College and established a modest factory to manufacture gold pen nibs. He set up the factory near Tokyo and within a year the company expanded the product line to include a whole suite of writing instruments. In 1918, Ryōsuke Namiki teamed up with Masao Wada and established the Pilot Pen Corporation. Within ten years, Namiki Manufacturing Company had its presence in Singapore, Malaysia, Shanghai, London and Boston. The company underwent a name change in 1938, when it was called Pilot Pen Co., Ltd. And later in 1950 it became Pilot Ink Company, Ltd. The end of the twentieth century was marked with rapid expansion and growth around the world. By the end of the century, Pilot Pen was truly a global brand.

Pilot Pen has often led the industry from the front. It rolled out the Capless in 1964, which featured a nib that could be completely retracted. This was unprecedented in fountain pens of the time. The Capless became Vanishing Point by the early seventies and a few years back it rolled out Metropolitan, which had become a popular fountain pen for beginners. Pilot Pen has made innumerable models with crafty designs, both in affordable series and luxury collections. It has also been one of the pioneers in custom pens and heritage writing instruments. Over the decades, Pilot Pen has manufactured fountain pens, ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, gel ink pens, marker pens and highlighters, mechanical pencils and refills.
